Is this licensed plumbing work?

Tap servicing and cistern internals are maintenance work. Anything past the wall — burst pipes, new runs, hot water units — needs a licensed plumber, and we'll say so on the spot.

Can you fit tapware I've bought?

Yes — the fitting price covers standard basin, sink and laundry tapware you supply.

What if the tap can't be saved?

We'll tell you before touching it, and the service fee comes off the replacement job.

What moves the price / fixed, inc GST

Taps and toilets are priced by what has to come apart, with the common parts supplied at cost.

  1. 01What is actually leaking — A washer, a cartridge and a cracked spindle are three different repairs, and the price steps with what has to be opened up.
  2. 02Age of the tap — Old brassware can often be reseated and saved. A seized spindle or a corroded body means replacement rather than repair.
  3. 03Mixer or traditional — A mixer cartridge is one part to swap. Traditional taps come apart further and take longer to get watertight again.
  4. 04Cistern internals — An inlet valve, an outlet valve and a perished flush seal are separate parts, and a running cistern often needs more than one.
  5. 05Parts — The booked price covers the labour and the common consumables. Specific tapware and cartridges are supplied at cost.

    Where the water is actually going

    A dripping tap is a small loss that never stops. It runs into the basin and down the drain, so it is invisible, and the water bill is usually what points at it. A running cistern is the same problem with a bigger number attached.

    Fixing it early is usually a washer or a valve. Leaving it lets mineral deposits build on the seat, and a seat that has eroded needs reseating or a new tap, which is a different job.

    Maintenance work, and where it stops

    Tap servicing and cistern internals are maintenance work. Anything past the wall — burst pipes, new runs, hot water units, gas — is licensed plumbing, and the honest thing is to say so on the spot rather than take the job.

    Where a repair crosses into licensed territory, the tap is left safe and the work is handed over. The service fee is not charged for a job that was never going to be done.

    Small parts, real water

    Washers, O-rings and cartridges cost very little. The water they waste does not stop on its own, and it runs for as long as the drip does.

    A running toilet is worse, because it can move a cistern of water every few minutes without anyone hearing it. If the meter ticks with everything turned off, the cistern is the first place to look.

Before you book

A photo and a brand name save a second visit.

  1. 01Turn the water off at the isolation valve if you know where it is, otherwise we will.
  2. 02Photograph the tap or cistern when you book so the right part comes out with us.
  3. 03Clear under the sink and around the cistern so there is room to work.
  4. 04Tell us the tapware brand if you know it, because cartridges are not interchangeable.
  5. 05Note any second drip — a leaking shower head or garden tap adds little time to the same visit.
  6. 06Keep the area dry for an hour after we leave so a slow weep shows itself.
