SA's fences legislation splits boundary fence costs. For repairs, most neighbours sort it informally — we invoice however you two agree to split it.

Repair or replace?

If more than a third of the posts have gone, replacement usually beats repair — we'll say so on site and the call is yours.

What moves the price / fixed, inc GST

Fences and gates are booked by the hour with a two-hour minimum, and materials are supplied at cost.

01How many posts have moved — One leaning post is a footing job. A run of them is a different scope, and the booked time covers the first two hours.
02What the fence is made of — Colorbond sheets, timber palings and good-neighbour panels come apart differently, and the fixings are not interchangeable.
03Matching the material — A repair only looks right if the paling profile or sheet colour matches, and older runs often need a close match.
04Gate weight and hardware — A light garden gate and a steel driveway gate need different hinges and different fixings into the post or pillar.
05Materials — The booked price covers the labour, with materials at cost, so what is needed on the day is what is charged for.

The post is the fence
A fence leans because the footing has given, not because the panel is tired. Re-setting the post in concrete, dug out and done properly, straightens everything fixed to it.
Bolting a bracket to a moving post just moves the problem a metre along. On a boundary line the posts are what everything else is strung from, so they get done first and everything else is measured off them.

Gates that latch first try
A gate that needs a shoulder is a hinge, a post or a diagonal problem. Re-hanging it square on new hinges, into a post that is not moving, is what makes a latch catch on the first push.
Steel gates on brick pillars need different fixings from a timber gate on a timber post, and a gate that is too heavy for its hardware will sag again whatever is done to it.

Repair, replace, and the Fences Act
The honest test is how much of the structure has gone. One or two posts is a repair. Once a third or more have moved, replacement usually costs less than chasing them one at a time.
On a boundary fence, South Australia's fencing legislation splits the cost between neighbours, and for repairs most people sort it out between themselves. The invoice can be split however the two of you agree.
